Celebration! by Texas Contemporary Abstract Painter Filomena Booth

Celebration!
30"x30"x1.5"
Acrylic on Canvas

Every once in a while I get a request to recreate a painting that has been sold.
I'm always open to commissions and love to try to recapture a particular "feel"
or mood from an earlier piece.  I always tell the prospective buyer that the new painting
will not be exactly the same as the first but that I will try my best to meet their expectations.
I'm pleased that Celebration! turned out to be a very close recreation of the original.

I also put together a YouTube video showing more detailed shots of the painting and some room views.

Fields and Streams by Texas Contemporary Artist Filomena de Andrade Booth

Fields and Streams
30"x40"x1.5"
Acrylic on canvas

The inspiration for this painting came from my view from a plane earlier this year.  It was early spring and the fields had not yet started to turn green.  Although the window seat is usually the most cramped and difficult to get out of, it's always my favorite place to watch the world go by.  The variety of colors and texture in the scene below me lead me to create this painting.

Fields and Streams is one of several paintings I currently have available on Artquiver.  To see my entire portfolio of original abstract paintings, please visit my website.

Prelude - Mixed Media Abstract Contemporary Painting by Texas Artist Filomena Booth

Prelude
24"x24"x.75"
Mixed-media on canvas

Sometimes it's just nice to let loose and let the painting decide which way to go.  I searched around for all sorts of materials and mediums to pour, scratch, glaze, etc. on to the canvas.  Transparent fluid colors were poured on to the already textured canvas.  Heavy gel medium, glass bead texture gel and crackle paste all added to the interesting ways that they interacted with the fluid paint.  Accents of metallic gold and iridescent paints created a jewel-like effect.

I am offering Prelude at a very special price of $250.00 for one week only, please click here to purchase.

Morning Rain

Morning Rain
24"x30"x1.5"
Acrylic on canvas

This is one of those paintings that was painted over several other starts.  It is very subtle but there's a lot of texture that doesn't quite show up in this picture.  Sgraffito and calligraphic elements were added to create more detail and interest.

Dilemma - Original Abstract Painting by Texas Contemporary Artist Filomena de Andrade Booth

 Dilemma
24"x30"x.75"
Acrylic on canvas
Sold

I've been going through a bit of an artist's "block" recently, but I guess that's pretty normal after an intense period of painting nearly every day.  Sometimes we just need a break away from the studio.  Anyway, this "dry spell" has also taken caused me to not blog as often as I should.  So, here I am...back again.

I decided to go through some paintings that I've sold in the last year, hoping for inspiration.  I came across "Dilemma" and remembered specifically how much I enjoyed working on this painting.  It was actually a reworked painting over another that just didn't work for me.  I've learned that no painting is ever completely a failure, it just may need a "break" for a while...just like I do now.

Almost There

Almost There
36"x30"x1.5"
Acrylic on Canvas

Every time I start a new painting, it's almost like re-learning every step each time.  I think that because I approach each painting in a different manner, without a preconceived notion in mind, it gives me the freedom to experiment with new ways of doing things.

In this painting, I applied paint freely to the canvas.  I used whatever was leftover on my palette from the last painting, my only concern being to establish the composition and structure of the painting.  As soon as paint is applied, the fear of the dreaded "white" space disappears.  I continued to build up the paint layers, each time adding textural elements and wiping out areas to expose under layers of color.  It's a slow process but eventually the structure of the painting begins to emerge from the amorphous and undefined "blob".  At this point, I begin to more carefully emphasize certain elements that appeal to me.  When, finally, I reach the point where I know that there is no more that can be added or subtracted, the painting is finished.

Come Sunrise - Original Abstract Painting by Texas Contemporary Artist Filomena de Andrade Booth

Come Sunrise
36"x36"x1.5"
Acrylic on Canvas

Last week I stretched and textured several new canvases.  Seeing them sit in the studio, inspires me to pick them up and set them up on the easel.  I started this painting by applying several washes of color to establish the composition.  I slowly built up the layers as I scaped and washed out areas to expose underlying colors.  I love how the texture of the canvas changes the way light bounces off the surface, creating even more interest.

Endless Time - Original Abstract Palette Knife Modern Art Red Painting by Texas Artist Filomena de Andrade Booth

Endless Time
30"x40"x1.5"
Acrylic on Canvas

I recently completed this heavily textured painting by applying several coats of gesso and acrylic gels. Before the layers were dry, I scraped and scratched into the surface with a variety of tools. After blending the colors with heavy gloss gel, I applied the paint with palette knives, brushes and sponges. The sculptural quality of the painting invites the viewer to touch the surface of the canvas.

Jardim dos Segredos by Filomena de Andrade Booth Texas Contemporary Abst...

I hope you enjoy watching my latest art clip of my new painting, Jardim dos Segredos. I included some "in progress" shots because I know my artist friends always ask to see how I start a painting. This one was not intended to be a floral, but the underpainting suggested a garden path with flowers.

I recently completed this large painting and currently have it listed for sale on Artful Home.  Layer upon layer of glazes have been applied.  Each successive layer changes the underlying color and adds depth and visual texture.  I love to wipe away areas as the glaze begins to dry, revealing even more interesting passages in the painting.

Cycle of Days - Original Abstract Painting by Contemporary Texas Artist Filomena Booth

Cycle of Days
24"x30"x.75"
Acrylic on canvas

Have I mentioned before that I love to play around with texture and a variety of techniques?  I'm sure I have!

I started this painting by texturing the canvas heavily with gesso.  I slathered it on, leaving hills and valleys and allowed it to dry.  Many layers of thin glazes of transparent acrylic, iridescent gold, thin washes of gesso and runs of water all created depth and a moody patina.

Cycle of Days is currently available through Artfulhome.  Please contact me for more information.

Transformations...painting in progress

Occasionally I like to take pictures of my work as it evolves on the easel.  I don't always know where I'm going when I start, but I usually know when I get there.

Here is the canvas with a few guide lines establishing the structure, composition of the painting and some preliminary color.  At this point, I'm not too worried about the colors I'm using.

A little more paint and the composition begins to emerge.

I decided to add bolder color...some hot pink and yellow orange.

More color and more glazes.

At this point I was begining to think that I was almost finished but this is where I needed a second opinion.  I asked my critic, my husband, what he thought.  He confirmed my feeling that it needed something more.

I decided to tie the whole thing together with a thin glaze of Quinacridone Gold mixed with a little Raw Umber.  Before the glaze began to set, I wiped out circles, exposing the underlying colors.

Here is the finished piece:

Light Elements - Original Abstract Modern Art Contemporary Acrylic Painting by Filomena de Andrade Booth

Light Elements
30"x24"x.75"

I completed this painting this past weekend.  It is based on a design I did a while back that was intended to depict light shining through a stained glass window.  It also reminds me of light shining through tree branches.  I've done several of these and all have sold except for the two most recent paintings.

The Day After - Abstract Painting on Yupo by Texas Contemporary Abstract Artist Filomena Booth

The Day After
Matted - 20"x16"
Acrylic on Yupo
$100.00
$10.00 s/h

Every once in a while I like to root around in my studio closet just to see what I have stashed away since we moved here.  I found this painting I did on Yupo a couple of years ago.  If you haven't tried working on this fun material, you should. It is a synthetic (plastic) material that allows the paint to slide around on the surface, creating all sorts of interesting forms.  It was originally created as a tough, durable material for the graphic arts industry and was manufactored in a variety of thicknesses.  Somehow, a starving artist somewhere decided to try it out and suddenly discovered it made a fun surface to paint on.  Or, maybe he just had some packing material laying around the studio and accidentally dripped paint on it,  who knows, either way it's an interesting discovery.

Click here for a demonstration on how to paint on Yupo.

The painting is matted and ready to frame.  Frame is not included.

I love to layer thin glazes of color, one over another.  As each layer begins to dry, I do a little subtractive painting to expose the layers beneath.  Heavier layers of color create more of a focal point, drawing the eye to the work to explore more of the detail.

The Daydream - Original Abstract Painting by Texas Contemporary Artist Filomena Booth

The Daydream
40"x36"x1.5"
Acrylic on Canvas

This is my latest painting.  It is heavily textured with thick layers of color that were applied with a large palette knife.  The problem with working with acrylics on a large canvas is that the paint sets up pretty fast and makes blending nearly impossible.  As I applied the paint, mixed with a variety of mediums, I used my hands and fingers to blend the paint directly on the canvas.  Sometimes the best tools are right at "hand".

This painting will be available through ArtfulhomeContact me if you have any questions.
